BPH is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. Because the prostate surrounds the urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the body), as it grows, it can squeeze the urethra and block the normal flow of urine. This is a very common condition in men over the age of 50.

Symptoms of BPH typically worsen over time and may include:

• Frequent or urgent need to urinate, especially at night (nocturia).
• Difficulty starting urination or a weak, interrupted urine stream.
• Feeling like the bladder is not completely empty after urination.
• Dribbling at the end of urination.

Unlike BPH, which affects older men, Prostatitis can affect men of all ages. It is the inflammation or infection of the prostate gland. It can cause severe pain in the lower back, groin, or pelvic area, painful ejaculation, and a burning sensation during urination. Treatment usually involves a targeted course of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications.

Accurate diagnosis is the first step to relief. Dr. Priyabrata Adhikari utilizes a comprehensive evaluation that may include a Digital Rectal Exam (DRE), a PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) blood test to rule out cancer, a urine test to check for infections, and a Uroflowmetry test to measure the strength of your urine stream.

• Medications: Drugs that relax the bladder neck muscles or shrink the prostate.
• Laser Prostate Surgery (HoLEP / ThuLEP): A highly advanced, minimally invasive procedure using laser energy to carefully remove the blocking tissue, ensuring very little bleeding and a rapid recovery.
• Robotic Surgery: Reserved for exceptionally large prostates, offering a safe and precise removal of the adenoma (overgrown tissue).
